The Future is in Healthcare Consumerism

Imagine a healthcare system where everyone is a knowledgeable, well-informed consumer of medical services, where they are responsible (or have access to robust personal systems that take on the responsibility) of their own health data. Care receivers will ultimately be happier and a huge financial and administrative burden on healthcare providers will be lifted, as they are able to free themselves from the increasingly impossible task of having to contend with trying to keep legacy health systems up to date.

 

This is healthcare consumerism. And it’s no longer a vision, but an inevitability.

Alphalake was borne out of the vision that the world is moving definitively in this direction. As smartphones and app ecosystems have advanced to record our lifestyle, metrics such as heart rate, our mood, exercise levels and what we eat are leading to a “quantitative self” and as a result causing a fundamental change in people’s relationship with health information. Contributing further to this pivotal change, is the advancement of User Experience or more accurately Customer Experience in broader society, as people become accustomed to very high end standards of service and efficiency in their daily lives. Highly efficient and digitally-enriched interactions in how people shop for their clothes and groceries, travel, consume services and interact with their chosen brands is leading to a shift in the level of service consumers now demand. And the level of control they expect to have over the services they receive. Healthcare systems and service providers are faced with trying to meet these demands and ultimately improving standards of care and access to health data. But it’s an unfair comparison. These rate of advancement in recent years in consumer experience have only been made possible through the way in which technology has evolved or more accurately the way in which technology itself is now able to be adopted and improved upon.

The traditional way of keeping up with technology development is now defunct. Organisations making large-scale investments in centralised systems has typically seen refresh cycles of 5-7 years for new hardware and distributed software systems. However, software applications are now being developed in what is referred to as a state of “continuous improvement”, which demands that server and centralised data systems are constantly updated to meet ever-increasing demands on them from software applications. This has led to a new era in how systems are designed. This approach. known as “serverless” or “microservices”, removes the reliance on virtual servers to allocate compute resources to software applications and ushers in an ecosystem that allows for continuous improvement of software application following agile development methodology.

Cloud-based Software-as-a-Service applications benefit from being developed in this way and this has given business’s that have embraced this approach to “DevOps” significant competitive advantage, which has in turn fuelled uptake further. It is now standard practice in all the successful consumer service providers to constantly develop their applications and services in this way without any dependenncy on 5-7 year server and data system upgrades. These highly scalable technology platforms have contributed to the sharp increase in the rate of Customer Experience improvement.

These consumer systems are increasingly designed to give the user self-fulfilment as there is we reach an inflection point where users become increasingly digitally savvy and applications are able to offer user-based controls. (Give an example of how a user takes control of data in consumer life).

Two things must happen in healthcare for it to keep up with the pace of change;

  1. Technology adoption must embrace SaaS and serverless with per-user/consumption-based billing to take advantage of agile continuous improvement.
  2. Look to give more control to users over their data and system management
