The democratision of healthcare and patient-led care has been frequently discussed over the last ten years, but how do we shift towards the patient having the knowledge, tools and empowerment to become responsible for their care?
Technology plays a central role, as artificial intelligence and machine learning work to disseminate data and then draw and apply insights at scale. The potential of AI to support the health industry through the prediction and detection of medical conditions is enormous, however to reach this potential, the quality and standardisation of data needs to be improved upon. In addition, we must consider the role of legislation, education, training and cultural change.
There is no doubt that the health model is undergoing a transformation. There is a shift away from a reactive model and towards early identification and proactive prevention. This approach will help empower patients to manage their health more effectively, in collaboration with their doctor.
But there is still a way to go, with some sectors of the population being heavily disadvantaged.
As people live longer, the democratisation of healthcare will be essential to ensure quality of life, eliminate the inequalities driven by social determinants of health and ensure that the health system can support patients in an optimal manner.
